Privacy Policy

Effective date: June 1, 2026

Jot is a voice-first notes app for iPhone, built and operated by an independent developer (the "developer," "we," "us," or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains, in plain language, what data Jot does and does not handle — both in the app and on the website at jot.sparqan.com.

Plain-English summary: The developer of Jot does not collect, receive, see, or store your notes, your voice, or any personal information. Notes you write stay on your iPhone and — if you turn on iCloud — sync only through your own private Apple iCloud account, where Apple acts as the data processor. Jot operates no servers of its own. Voice is transcribed on your device and the audio is discarded immediately. There are no analytics, no advertising, no accounts, and no third-party SDKs.

1. The Jot iPhone App

1.1 Your notes

Notes you create in Jot are stored on your iPhone using Apple's SwiftData framework. If you have iCloud enabled for Jot, those notes also sync to your own private iCloud database through Apple's CloudKit, so they appear across your signed-in Apple devices.

This CloudKit sync — and the silent background notifications Apple uses to keep your devices up to date — are network connections to Apple's iCloud, made on your behalf and tied to your Apple Account. Jot operates no servers of its own. Your notes sync only through your private Apple iCloud account (CloudKit), where Apple acts as the data processor. The developer never receives, sees, or stores your notes. We have no admin console, no database, and no technical means to read your content.

1.2 Photos you attach

You can attach photos to a note. Attached photos are treated exactly like your notes: stored on your iPhone and, if iCloud is enabled, synced only to your own private iCloud database. Jot does not request access to your photo library — the system photo picker runs outside the app and hands over only the photos you explicitly choose. The developer never receives, sees, or stores them.

1.3 Voice and audio

When you record a voice note, Jot uses Apple's on-device speech recognizer (the SFSpeechRecognizer framework, configured with requiresOnDeviceRecognition = true). Transcription happens locally on your iPhone. The audio is discarded immediately once transcription completes — it is never written to disk, never stored, and never transmitted off your device. Only the resulting text becomes part of your note.

1.3 Permissions Jot requests

Jot does not request access to Contacts, Photos, Location, Health, Calendars, or any other system data.

1.4 What Jot does NOT do

1.5 iCloud (Apple as data processor)

If you are signed in to iCloud and have enabled iCloud sync for Jot in iOS Settings, Apple syncs your notes between your devices through your private CloudKit database. This data resides in your own Apple Account and is governed by Apple's privacy practices, not the developer's. See Apple's Privacy Policy and iCloud Terms. You can turn iCloud sync for Jot on or off at any time in Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Apps Using iCloud.

1.6 Crash and diagnostic reports

If you have opted in to share diagnostics with Apple (Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements), Apple may collect anonymized crash and performance reports for Jot and make aggregate, anonymized versions available to the developer through Apple. These reports contain no note content, no audio, and no information that identifies you. You can disable this at any time in the same iOS setting. The developer integrates no separate crash-reporting SDK.

2. The jot.sparqan.com Website

2.1 What the website collects

This website is an informational landing page. It does not collect personal information through forms, sign-ups, or accounts. Standard server logs (such as IP address, browser type and version, pages visited, and timestamps) may be collected automatically by the hosting provider, GitHub Pages, as part of normal operation and security. This is governed by GitHub's Privacy Statement.

2.2 Third-party services used by the website

2.3 Cookies

This website does not set its own cookies, run analytics scripts, or load advertising pixels.

3. Children's Privacy (COPPA)

Jot is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13 (or under the equivalent minimum age in your country). The developer does not knowingly collect personal information from children — and, as described above, does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone. If you believe a child has provided personal information to the developer, please contact us and we will address it promptly.

4. Data Retention

Because the developer holds none of your data, there is nothing for the developer to retain or delete. Your notes are retained for as long as you keep them: they live on your device and, if enabled, in your private iCloud. You control retention entirely — delete a note in the app, or remove Jot's iCloud data from Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage, and it is gone. (Note: Jot v1 deletes are permanent; there is no in-app Trash yet.)

5. Security

Notes on your device are protected by iOS's built-in data protection and your device passcode/biometrics. Notes synced to iCloud are protected by Apple's CloudKit security and your Apple Account credentials; we encourage enabling two-factor authentication and, where available, Apple's Advanced Data Protection. Because the developer operates no servers and holds no user data, there is no developer-side database to breach.

6. California Residents (CCPA / CPRA)

The developer does not collect, sell, or share the personal information of California residents. "Sell" and "share" are used here as defined by the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the CPRA. Because no personal information is collected through the app, there is generally nothing to access, delete, correct, or port; you will never be discriminated against for exercising any privacy right. If you have a request or question, contact us using the details below.

7. European & UK Residents (GDPR / UK GDPR)

The developer does not process personal data of individuals in the EEA, the UK, or Switzerland through the Jot app. Your notes are processed only on your device and within your own Apple iCloud account, where Apple is the relevant data controller/processor under its own terms. The only personal data connected with our services that a third party processes is the standard server-log and font-loading data described in Section 2, handled by GitHub and Google under their own policies. To the extent any of your data were ever considered processed by us, the lawful basis would be your consent and the performance of providing the app you chose to use (Article 6(1)(a)/(b)). You retain the GDPR/UK GDPR rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection, and the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. Requests directed to the developer will be answered as described in Section 9; requests about iCloud-stored content should be directed to Apple.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. The current version is always available at jot.sparqan.com/privacy.html.
