Quick answers + how to reach a human.

Common questions

How do I install the Home Screen widget?
  1. Long-press an empty area of your Home Screen until icons jiggle.
  2. Tap + in the top-left.
  3. Search for Jot and add the widget.
  4. Tap the widget anywhere to start recording — the app launches straight into capture.
I tapped the widget but nothing recorded.

Jot needs Microphone and Speech Recognition permissions to capture voice. Open Settings → Jot and make sure both toggles are on. If they were already on, force-quit Jot (swipe up to the App Switcher, swipe Jot up) and try again.

Are my notes synced between iPhone and iPad?

If you're signed in to the same iCloud account on both devices and have iCloud enabled for Jot in Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Apps Using iCloud → Jot, then yes — notes sync automatically through Apple's CloudKit. Initial sync after install can take a minute.

I deleted a note. Can I recover it?

Jot v1 does not have a Trash or Recently Deleted folder yet — deletes are permanent. If you have iCloud Backup enabled and have a recent backup from before the delete, you can restore the device from backup, but that affects all your data, not just Jot. A native Trash feature is on the v1.5 roadmap.

Is my voice sent to Apple or to your servers?

Neither. Jot uses Apple's on-device speech recognizer (SFSpeechRecognizer with requiresOnDeviceRecognition = true). The audio is transcribed locally on your iPhone and discarded once transcription completes. We have no servers and no way to receive your voice.

Speech recognition isn't working — it just shows blank text.

On-device speech recognition requires the language model to be downloaded on your iPhone. iOS usually downloads this in the background, but you can force it: Settings → General → Keyboard → Dictation → On, then add the language for your dictation in Keyboards. iPhone needs to be on Wi-Fi and plugged in for the initial download.

Does Jot work without an internet connection?

Yes. Capture, transcription, edits, search, and reading all work fully offline. The only thing that requires connectivity is iCloud sync between your devices.

How do I export my notes?

Open a note, tap the share button, and pick a destination (Notes, Mail, Files, etc.). Bulk export is on the v1.5 roadmap.

Will Jot stay free?

Jot v1 is free with no ads, no subscriptions, and no in-app purchases. Future advanced features (transcript correction, web app, bulk export, AI summarization) may be part of a paid tier in v1.5+, but the core voice-capture-to-text experience will stay free.

How do I report a bug or request a feature?

Email us with as much detail as you can — what you were doing, what happened, what you expected, and your iPhone model and iOS version if you know them. Screenshots help.
